Print Imprint
Print Imprint is my second site-specific work that has evolved from my interest in taking advantage of what the site of sculpture by the sea has to offer that no other walk or exhibition can provide. Sand and natural formations.
I have been taken by the process of “Impression” installation which has extended my practice by exploring new tools and challenges contained within a sphere that is interactive and collaborative.
We have all left prints in the sand and gave no thought of what trace or trail we were leaving behind. I see it as an allegory for our time on this continent and what we have taken and brought to it. The temporary marker of a footprint speaks louder about ourselves than we realise, yet time has a way to inevitably wash over what was once there before. It is a collective action that we are all privy to, however, in a time that is slowly moving towards a voice it is also a symbol of direction, belonging, reference to country and reminder of past custodians.
The construction of this multiple pieced work is a journey that is in keeping of site-specific conventions. By collecting found footprints from west and east coastlines of Australia. Each footprint is found and casted using plaster to create a mould made on the corresponding beach it has been founded on. From the plaster mould it is taken through the process of bronze sand-casting an industrial and fast approach to mould making. Using bronze or aluminium each footprint is solidified in time exposing the neutral space made by its previous owner juxtaposing the overlooked negative space made from an impression.
