Body of Water
Consistent with the theme of water and nature, Stewart has dedicated herself to building a body of work entitled: Body of Water.
Focusing on the use of perspective and light, Stewart hopes to convey in her work the sublime and waters power to connect and isolate ourselves.
Water has the power to heal and cause destruction and there is a balance in acknowledging its beauty.
Stewarts's painting practice has been intensely inspired by romanticist painter Caspar David Friedrich, mainly, 'Monch am Meer" 1808-1810. His methods invalidating the traditional rules of perspectives and experimentation of light found in nature.
In my work, the figures are blurred and feel lost in space, held in place by the use of colour. The scenes comment on the floating state between what each day provides us human beings -uncertainty but comfort in the connections we make.
I attempt to contrast the darkness and the long horizons framed by the sea to represent vastness and possibility.
I have tried negotiating the feeling of nostalgia and its connection to memory to discover comfort in space to transcend an understanding of phenomena.
The events of COVID 19 have triggered a dramatic reflection worldwide on how isolation commands and demonstrates the importance of connection in these past months.
Each work symbolizing the human psyche of action, conscious and subconscious. Hauling together escapism and emersion from patience and perseverance, all found in a body of water.
