Fisherman - Maquarie Art Prize 2020
"You did not kill the fish only to keep alive and to sell for food, he thought. You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman. You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after. If you love him, it is not a sin to kill him. Or is it more?"
- Ernst Hemmingway, "Old man and the Sea"
We evolve from fish and in that moment of stepping onto land, we have evolved to learn how to fish.
Stewart paints fishermen to draw attention to our psyche and how we have used nature as a means to develop our economy. By pulling fish from the blue depths of our oceans we have ensured a means to feed the masses, but it has also caused our society to wonder about the state of our future oceans.
