Stone Age
At the core of Stewarts practice, is a multi-disciplinary approach to making and collaborating. Strengthened by a search for symbiosis between process, materials, and site.
Inspired by investigating structures of the natural and built world, Stewart exposes impressions found in nature to reveal the possibilities of neutral space. A process best characterised as ‘impression’ installation.
This involves exposing the negative space caused by imprints made from erosion, movement, or force. Stewart’s practice uses ceramics, stone carving, and sand casting to invert negative space to create abstract forms.
A revelation between material being morphed, stripped, and returned to earth to be discovered in a different state. It is a show of manipulation and involuntary acceptance of a cycle.
The work is about observing how we impart ourselves into the landscape because whether we choose to or not there is always a trace. By playing between synthesis and duality reflection is found. The space in-between an imprint is evidence of discovery and possibility. However also reminds us of what we have either disturbed or taken.
